Education Initiatives Throughout California

With the diversity of projects and initiatives, Teaching Artists are taking their experience to the table and sharing our strengths, needs and expectations.

Here’s some statewide, regional or local projects that TASC Advisory Board members are up to.

CREATE CA (Statewide)

CREATE CA is a California coalition working to eliminate opportunity gaps by improving policy, practice, and access for all students to benefit from a quality education in and through the arts.

The coalition leaders are the California Arts Council (CAC), California Department of Education (CDE) and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, California Alliance for Arts Education (CAAE), and California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA).

Since 20011, hundreds of educators, teaching artists, administrators, policy makers, and community members have met to share their experience and concerns about the role of arts learning in California Schools.

From these meetings,  9 Key Areas have emerged as calls to action for working groups.  Key Area #7 — Teaching Artists in Partnership — was identified to specifically address the unique role of Teaching Artists as partners in schools and community sites and the issues that have historically existed in the field with credentialed arts specialists and classroom teachers.

Key Area #7 is where we are currently most engaged, though each of the 9 Key Areas has direct relevance to and will benefit from, Teaching Artist engagement.

TASC Regional Advisory Council member Sabrina Klein is co-chair of this working group on Teaching Artists in Partnership, with co-chair Terry Lenihan, Director of Art Education and Assistant Professor at Loyola Marymount University.
